U of A Digitally Preserves Important Dinosaur Tracks Found in Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Scientists using laser-imaging technology have documented and digitally preserved the first known set of theropod dinosaur tracks in the state of Arkansas. The tracks, discovered in 2011 in a working gypsum quarry near Nashville, Ark. have since been destroyed.

The history of Arkansas stretches back to over 500 million years ago when the state was covered in water from a prehistoric ocean. Between 250 and 300 million years ago, the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains formed, which lifted parts of the state out of the water and allowed the preservation of some fossils.

Robert Friday, a farmer from Sevier County in Southwest Arkansas, discovered the fossils on his farm near Lockesburg, Ark., in 1972. The fossils have been named Arkansaurus fridayi in honor of the place and the person who found them. A close look at the site revealed three foot bones, three toe bones and two claws.
